Mini Travel Vlog: A Romantic Weekend in Inveraray, Scotland | Mary Skinner
Matthew and I spent last weekend up near Loch Fyne for a relaxing spa weekend out of the city. We spent a partial day touring Inveraray Castle and exploring the town, but I particularly enjoyed just sitting by the loch and soaking in the quiet.
Instagram voted for the Inveraray footage to be a mini vlog instead of a segment in the next weekly vlog, so here we are 🫡

Warm/hot water softens clothes, cold stiffens. Try some white vinegar for the items you want to be soft but you will lose any detergent scent. Good luck. Love the house!!

That wooden cabinet in your kitchen is called a hoosier cabinet in the US. It is what they used before they had built in cupboards. I bet the counter top pulls out a little to extend and you see where they stored flour, because they made their own bread. I didn't know they were a UK thing too.

There are drying racks that you can hang from the ceiling made of wood and wrought iron. You lower them to hang clothes and you raise them to catch the rising heat. They're not that noticeable. Another possibility is a fold out rack that you position over a radiator so that it catches the heat. (Lulu is one well made brand.) I have one but not over a radiator and it takes so long to dry. Another is to see about getting the wiring in to have a condensing dryer (so no need to vent out). This means you could tuck it anywhere. I have one of those in the kitchen because the previous owner had it in a shed that I tore down. There was no way to vent it outside.

Having moved from Virginia to Northern Ireland, I found that culture shock really hit after two years. I think it's having to deal with all of the difference for things you never encounter during visits. It's the day to day stuff when you purchase a home. At some point, it becomes overwhelming before acceptance sets in. The US with its population size it offers so many choices, and it's easy to get what you need to set up a home. (I mean, finding something like door stops that fit to the door hinge was not an easy task here in NI.. Most people had not heard of them, which is amazing given that door placement is often not conducive to wall trim spring stops. Many people put stops right into the floor because of that, which I was unwilling to do. My housekeeper had never seen the door hinge stops, which work in areas where other stops are completely inconvenient and bonus, they're typically not noticeable. She's ordered them for her home.) People in N. Ireland not hearing of things that are available on the "mainland" (Scotland, England, Wales) is relatively common here as being a smaller island with NI having a very small population means that we have much fewer choices than most places. Etsy is a great place for bespoke things for your home... so many good crafts people here. For me, it's been a life saver for quality goods. Same for ebay... For example, I have a wrought iron shoe rack made to my specifications to fit under a bench by an ebayer... it's perfect for the hall where most of us hang our coats (given the lack of closets). BTW, I brought my American furniture and lamps with me, and I'm so glad I did. Of course, having visited Scotland (and Ireland) a lot as a kid, my whole style is 1940s British Country, which is not currently in style in N. Ireland. Choices in furnishings and lamps, unless you scour antique stores, are very limited here and tend toward the glitzy modern or cheap looking farmhouse. I really do not like the choices in lamps and lighting fixtures here in N.I. (I hope it is better for you.) I just had everything rewired. I've purchased some overhead lighting, but have only purchased two lamps when my lamps died (or in the case of one, it was knocked over and had a glass shade I knew I'd not be able to replaced). Went with bankers lamps because they were taller--that's my main complaint... so many of the table lamps in N.I. are very tiny. When I decided to move my lamps around, I needed to change out a shade, and twice now I've had to order lamp shades from the states because lamps here don't have harps... the shade fits right on the bulb. Fine if your harp is not a permanent part of your lamp (and they were with antiques). You can buy lamps with harps here (with a height typical of the US), but you are stuck with the shade that comes with them unless you want to purchase from a limited range of "American" shades. This is the sort of culture shock I'm talking about. I was used to going to Lowe's for pity's sake and having a great selection or to a lamp shade store and having my pick. I could take a lamp and try on to find the right color and size. Then there's the difference of what plants work in your garden. I love gardening but live in one of the driest areas in N. Ireland that's also incredibly windy and my back garden in a complete sun sink in the summer. The combination has been a nightmare of learning because so few plants do well in the intense winds. * laughing at myself * It might not sound like it but I love living in N. Ireland... I think we just get spoiled for choice in the US.

I figured your hubby would have reverse culture shock. I had that when I came back to the US from living in Korea for 6 years. Took me 2 years to feel more back to normal in the US. I think reverse culture shock is more disorienting than culture shock as someone who has lived in 5 countries.

welcome to Edinburgh!! I am Scottish and live here, definitely the weather is not the best. Really recommend a SAD lamp for your desk, especially in Winter when it's just sooo dark. Summer makes up for it by being light so late. I am an autumnal girl and don't like too much heat but even I struggle with the lack of sun at times. Recommend getting out for full days when it's sunny ☀

That antique cabinet in your kitchen is usually called a Hoosier in the USA. The dispenser you see on the inside was usually used to dispense flour and the enamel worktop was ideal for baking. Since this one is likely made in Scotland it may go by a different name.

It’s great to see your enthusiasm for old things that we take for granted. Looks gorgeous but I’m not sure the basement rooms will be useable in the winter with the cold we have here in Scotland. I think you will need a dryer, the heat pump dryers are good and don’t need vented so can be plugged in anywhere. I had a few months recently without a dryer and hated the crispy towels especially.

I moved to Northern England from NOVA, going about 7 years. Even after this long it is still nice to see others that are experiencing the same life event. The transatlantic flight distance from family is hard, and the long winters and short summers are also difficult “mood” wise. I didn’t really get homesick but would be nice to be able to go back without needing to fly back as it’s so expensive. I don’t know if Scotland is the same but in England you can drive for a year from your arrival on your US license, if you will be driving manual (or even if automatic) and as I’ve seen that you have driving anxiety (me too now) I would recommend taking advantage of driving during that first year as it will help a lot later when obtaining your UK license. I really struggled with driving in the UK and wish I had tried practicing earlier to build confidence. Looking forward to seeing your journey.
